My garden is blooming!

I love this time of year! Every time I walk outside I see new flowers blooming and new little biddies emerging from the soil. I love it! Let me take you on a journey around the house.  Let’s start in the back yard!

In the back of the house I have my vegetable garden. It’s only about 2 feet deep, but it’s about 30 feet long. It doesn’t look like much in the spring, but by the autumn it is very impressive! This year I have the following veggies growing: cucumbers, corn, sunflowers, carrots, black beans, edamame beans, zucchini, broccoli, asparagus, green onions, green peppers, red bell peppers, various types of lettuce, as well as my herb garden with plenty of dill, cilantro, thyme, oregano, rosemary, and mint.

Top left: more beans sprouting, in a nice little line!  Top right: Another mystery plant growing in my asparagus. What could it be?

Top: My herb garden. That’s thyme on the left, oregano in the middle, mint in the back, and rosemary in the front. I have a whole separate box growing nothing but cilantro and dill–my favorite summertime herbs!

When we bought our house, there were no plants here at all. I had a lot of work to do! I planted about 30 lilac twigs the first year, and they really have grown into great big bushes!  Tonight I went out and picked some lilacs for the house and my office.

That’s the basket I carry around with me in the evenings. I use it to pick veggies, herbs, and flowers for the house.

In the front of my house, I have more flower gardens. It’s actually a lot of square footage of flower bed space, and I’ve spent hundreds of dollars in the past five years planting bushes and perrenials to fill out the space.

Irises are some of my favorite, and the little ones are blooming already! I have a whole area in my back yard with lilacs and big purple irises that I didn’t even take pictures of. Those irises are not blooming yet.

Now, I have a wrap-around driveway, since I live on the corner of two streets. In the middle I have an “island” that is really quite sad. That is  my next project: in the next few weeks I am going to order some bricks to build a mini retaining wall. I want to expand this section, give it some definition, and clean it up so it doesn’t look quite so haphazard. Unfortunately I have a nasty little vine growing in the midst of this mess that is choking the hell out of my crab apple tree. I keep cutting it down and trying to pull the roots up, but it is more than I can handle.

I have some really pretty flowers blooming in my “island” as well!

So there you go…there are a few pictures of my garden. I’m sure I’ll post more  pictures in the coming weeks, especially as my vegetable garden takes off! I love watching my garden grow!
